MLB Insider Shares Key Details About Garrett Crochet’s Reported Extension

Monday started off pretty rough for the Red Sox, but it concluded with an extremely positive development for the organization.

Hours after dropping its series opener in Baltimore, Boston reportedly agreed to a contract extension with Garrett Crochet. Crochet, who the Red Sox acquired in a blockbuster offseason trade with the Chicago White Sox, reportedly will have a six-year, $170 million deal go into effect next year.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who broke the news about the reported extension, added that the contract has an opt-out clause after the 2030 season. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand followed up with additional details about the unprecedented pact.

“Crochet’s deal includes up to $2 million per year in escalators between 2027-2031 based on his finish in Cy Young voting, per source,” Feinsand posted to X. “The deal does not include a no-trade clause, per source, but he will receive a $2 million assignment bonus if he is traded during the course of the contract.”

An extension for Crochet was expected, as it would have been reckless for Boston to trade four top prospects in exchange for only two years of service. But when Opening Day arrived and the sides hadn’t yet come to terms, many Red Sox fans likely were overcome with uneasiness.

But those nerves vanished Monday, as the star southpaw now is set to be a Fenway Park fixture for years to come.
