Aaron Lennon reveals how Chelsea could offer Tottenham a Europa League boost

0 16

Aaron Lennon has made it clear—winning the Europa League is the only way for Tottenham Hotspur to turn things around and rescue what has been a frustrating campaign.

Tottenham are now deep into the business end of the season, and while most of their campaign has been bleak, there remains a chance for a fairytale ending.

Yes, Tottenham Hotspur are languishing in 14th place, having lost 15 of their 29 league matches, but they still have a shot at securing silverware with their continued involvement in the Europa League.

The trophy drought has stretched beyond a decade, and while fans hardly need reminding, the pressure is mounting. Ange Postecoglou, under fire in his second season, has insisted he tends to win in his second year.

Of course, lifting the Europa League this season would be historic and could provide an immediate response to growing criticism.

Aaron Lennon urges Tottenham to go all out for Europa League glory

Former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon has spoken to Telecom Asia Sport about the state of Spurs’ season and what needs to be done to turn things around.

He said: “The Europa League is massive for the football club. There’s no hiding from the fact that this has been a difficult season for Spurs, but in football, things can change quickly.

“The opportunity is there in the Europa League. If they can get to the final and win it, that could save the season because it would mean Champions League football next year.”

Spurs’ Premier League campaign is a write-off. There’s no denying it. A Europa League triumph, however, would flip the narrative completely.

Lennon isn’t alone in this view either—Dimitar Berbatov also told us exclusively that Spurs need to end their trophy drought and expects this group of players to be fuelled by frustration from hearing about their failures repeatedly.

Lennon highlights crucial Chelsea clash

Lennon also stressed the importance of Thursday’s London derby, urging Tottenham to put in a strong performance at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “They have to start gaining some form in the league, and what a game that will be—Chelsea, a direct rival and a London derby.

“In games like these, you don’t really need motivation—you just have to be ready. I’m sure at the start of the season, this would have been one of the games they’d have been looking out for.

“The break has probably come at a good time—time to take a breather, reset, and get going again because, at some point, they have to pick up form. If they win, it’ll be a massive boost going into Europe and for what’s left of the season.”

A strong showing against Chelsea could be exactly what Spurs need to build momentum ahead of the Europa League push. With their top-four hopes in the league all but dead, it’s now or never for Postecoglou and this Tottenham squad.
