Video Of Kristian Campbell Making Red Sox Roster Will Make Your Day

The Red Sox made it official and added selected Kristian Campbell to the major league roster, and they revealed the moment the top prospect found out about it.

Campbell is slated to start for Boston in its season opener against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on Thursday. The 22-year-old will be the youngest Opening Day second baseman to start for the Red Sox since Reggie Smith in 1967, per former senior manager of media relations J.P. Long.

The starting nod marked a remarkable rise for Campbell, so manager Alex Cora needed a unique way to reveal the news to the young prospect.

“How many guys do you know from Georgia Tech have played in the big leagues?” Cora asked Campbell in a video released by the Red Sox.

Campbell named Jason Varitek, who was also in the room, as well as Nomar Garciaparra, Jay Payton, Matt Wieters and Mark Teixeira. Campbell wasn’t sure what else to say and couldn’t name anyone else.

“You got to do the homework, kid,” Cora said. “So make sure when you do the homework, you can add your name to the list. You’re going to be coming with us. You’re coming to the big leagues.”

Campbell is known for his humble and reserved nature, which was made evident when it was Varitek who burst out with an, “Are you excited?” Cora, Varitek and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow congratulated Campbell on a major step in his career as he hopes to show off his appreciation Thursday.
