Tottenham could land sought-after midfielder if they win the Europa League
Plenty of reports over the last few weeks have talked up Tottenham’s interest in Angel Gomes, and journalist Ben Jacobs has now revealed how the Europa League could come into play.
The Lille midfielder will be a free agent this June and various outlets have revealed over recent weeks that Tottenham have made contact with Gomes regarding a free transfer.
Ange Postecoglou is thought to be a big fan of Gomes, with the Lilywhites allegedly laying the groundwork to win the race for the England international.
Gomes is also reportedly also of interest to the likes of West Ham, Man United, Aston Villa and Bournemouth, but a fresh update has shed light on why Tottenham are well placed to land the 24-year-old.
Tottenham could have an advantage in the race for Angel Gomes
Journalist Ben Jacobs has now become the latest to confirm that Tottenham Hotspur are indeed keen on winning the race for the Lille man, who looks on course to return to England.
He explains that Gomes does not consider a lack of European football as a deal breaker, which gives Spurs an advantage as the transfer race heats up.
When asked about Gomes’ future, Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “Tottenham are interested as well, and the player, by all accounts, isn’t going to make his decision solely based on who does or doesn’t have European football.
“That means that if Tottenham don’t get any European football next season, it may not put Gomes off, and I’m told that he’s relatively keen on returning to England as well, so that could give Spurs an advantage.”
Why Spurs may have to win the Europa League to sign Gomes
The lack of Champions League football may not be a deal breaker for Gomes, but Tottenham might still have to win the Europa League to stand a chance of signing the midfielder.
This is because reports indicate that Ange Postecoglou has to achieve European qualification to still be in his job next season.

Postecoglou appears to be the one driving Tottenham’s interest in Gomes and given the uncertainty over the Australian’s future at N17, the Spurs recruitment team may not want to rush with a move for the Man United academy graduate just yet.
