Alex Cora Responds To Top Red Sox Prospect’s Roster Chances
The Red Sox will roll out what looks like their Opening Day lineup, which could mean huge things for one Boston prospect.
One of the most notable names on the lineup sheet is Kristian Campbell at second base. Friday will be the second straight game Boston’s No. 2 prospect starts in the infield with multiple regulars, it begged the question: will Campbell make the Opening Day roster?
“We have a pretty good idea of what we’re going to do (at second). We just have to be patient,” Cora told reporters, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith.
Campbell’s offensive numbers were fine throughout Grapefruit League play. What has stood out about the 22-year-old was his defense. His athleticism was on display, and he’s shown a good ability to make routine plays, which is remarkable given he was a relative unknown to most fans before the 2024 season.
The top prospect made a three-level rise in Boston’s minor leagues last year, and it could culminate in him being the team’s starting second baseman next week.
Veterans like Alex Bregman are high on Campbell, and fellow members of the “big three” also made solid cases for themselves to crack the Opening Day roster. That decision should come after this weekend after Cora and the rest of the coaching staff evaluate their options.
