New Celtics Arena? Wyc Grousbeck Weighs In On Future Plans

The Grosubeck family fetched a record-setting price in the sale of the Boston Celtics on Thursday.

And that’s with the Celtics not even owning their own arena.

Bill Chisholm, who is a Massachusetts native and managing director and co-founder of Symphony Technology Group in California, and his investment partners agreed to pay $6.1 billion to secure ownership of the illustrious franchise. It’s the highest price paid for a North American sports team, exceeding the $6.05 billion the Washington Commanders went for in 2023.

There were rumors prior to the sale that whoever took ownership of the Celtics would look to build an exclusive arena for the team — the Celtics currently lease TD Garden from Delaware North, which is the company directed by Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacob.

In an interview with The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, Chisholm let Wyc Grousbeck, who is expected to stay on with the franchise until 2028, address the situation and it looks like the Celtics have no plans to leave TD Garden any time soon.

“We’ll always do something together with (Delaware North), I would predict, and it’ll be renovating the Garden together with them overall, as we’ve done for many years together,” Grousbeck told Himmelsbach. “We’ve each chipped into that. It’s really a partnership in that regard. That’s going to continue into the 2030s, and then we’ll probably both look and see what we should do.”

Grousbeck noted that the Celtics’ lease with TD Garden runs through the 2035-36 season.

The thought of the Celtics potentially trying to construct a new arena had many fans thinking about all the possibilities. But given Grousbeck’s comments, those ideas will have to be put on hold — at least for now.
