Antonio Conte gave up on Tottenham player in his first week, now he is flying

0 0

A new report has now revealed that Antonio Conte had made up his mind about one Tottenham defender the week that the player arrived at the club.

Very few players have had as dramatic a rise at Spurs in as short a space of time as one defender has this season.

Djed Spence was written off as a flop until the summer, and despite staying at the club, struggled to get a look in at the start of the season, even being left out of the Europa League squad for the group stages by Ange Postecoglou.

In fact, the right-back’s first start for Spurs came only against Southampton back in December of last year, a full two and a half years after his move to N17 from Middlesbrough.

However, less than three months on, he has already become one of the club’s most important players and one of the first names on Postecoglou’s teamsheet.

Antonio Conte wrote Djed Spence off at Tottenham

It is clear that Ange Postecoglou’s predecessor was not a fan of the right-back as Antonio Conte referred to Djed Spence as a “club signing” just weeks after the defender had arrived at the club.

The Times have now explained that the Italian was never going to hand an opportunity to the former Boro youngster, having made up his mind very early on about the player.

In fact, the outlet quotes one source from Hotspur Way as saying that: “Antonio checked out with Djed in his first week”.

However, not only has Spence managed to outlast Conte at Spurs, but he has proved the Italian’s judgement wrong, having been one of the best players in his position across the Premier League so far this calendar year.

What people at Spurs expect of Spence

While the 24-year-old had a challenging first couple of years at Tottenham, he is now reaping the rewards for his hard work, having proven to Postecoglou that he deserves to be a key part of his side.

In fact, it has been reported there is a lot of excitement at Hotspur Way about how good a player Spence can become, with many convinced that he has the attributes to evolve into one of the best full-backs in world football.
