Vincent Janssen makes very honest admission about his time with Harry Kane at Tottenham

0 2

Vincent Janssen insists he never felt entitled to more opportunities for game time at Tottenham because he has a certain Mr Harry Kane above him in the pecking order.

For a long time, Tottenham Hotspur struggled to secure a suitable backup to Harry Kane, with several strikers failing to have the expected impact at the club.

One of the more high-profile flops was Vincent Janssen, who arrived at Spurs with a big reputation during the summer of 2015 on the back of winning the Eredivisie Golden Boot with AZ Alkmaar.

However, the Dutchman struggled during his spell at White Hart Lane, scoring just six goals across 42 appearances at the club, and he has now made an admission about the chances he got at the Premier League side.

Vincent Janssen never felt he could displace Harry Kane at Tottenham

Following his Spurs disappointment, Janssen had a successful spell with FC Monterrey in Mexico before making the switch back to Europe in 2022, with a switch to Royal Antwerp.

The centre-forward has showcased his quality for the Belgian club having scored 50 times and registered 19 assists in 126 matches for the side, captained by former Tottenham fan favourite Toby Alderweireld.

Janssen’s goal numbers over the last five years perhaps prove that his Spurs spell was just a blip, but the 30-year-old certainly does not have any illusions that he should have played more ahead of Harry Kane.

When asked about being benched in favour of the England captain, the Netherlands international told Voetbal Primeur: “In my years at Tottenham I never had the idea that I deserved more chances. He was really just so good that you never had the idea that I was going to take his place.”

Why being Kane’s understudy is especially difficult

The strikes who Spurs signed over the last decade found out just how difficult it is to be a backup to Kane as the former Tottenham man wants to play every game when he is fit.

He is not someone who likes being rested and is obsessed with scoring goals. Even Gareth Southgate had some problems identifying a suitable understudy to the 31-year-old for England.

It appears as if Bayern Munich are having the same issue now, with Mathys Tel deciding that he is not going to get enough opportunities if he remains at the Allianz Arena.
