Bittersweet news for Tottenham as Benjamin Sesko update emerges
Tottenham Hotspur have just learned that they need not spend a huge fee to sign Benjamin Sesko, but the North London club have also found out that two other Premier League giants are now extremely keen on beating them to the RB Leipzig star.
The Slovakian striker is fast emerging as one of the best young players in German football, having been on fire in front of goal this season, with 17 strikes to his name across all competitions so far.
Just a few days ago, an update from Germany revealed that Tottenham are one of the clubs to express an interest in Sesko, whose release clause is expected to reach around €80m (£66.2m) by the summer.
However, Spurs have just learned that they need not pay that clause to sign the 21-year-old, but they will face one major roadblock in getting a deal over the line.
Tottenham can sign Benjamin Sesko on a discount but face competition
TBR Football have now revealed that the centre-forward has a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with RB Leipzig that he will be allowed to leave if the Bundesliga club’s asking price is met.
It is revealed that the East German club would not insist that Sesko’s full release clause be met by suitors, but the report does not say how much they are expected to demand for their marksman.
However, that does not mean that Tottenham Hotspur will find the deal straightforward as Liverpool and Chelsea have now joined in the race for the striker, with the Blues currently said to be at the front of the queue for the young forward.
The Reds are also said to be big fans of the Bundesliga man, who Arne Slot has identified as an option to replace Darwin Nunez in the summer.
Will Spurs get involved in a bidding war for Sesko?
It looks unlikely that Tottenham would get involved in a bidding war with the likes of Chelsea for a striker, with the West London club being in much more urgent need of a number nine.
Even if Richarlison leaves in the summer, Ange Postecoglou would have Dominic Solanke and Mathys Tel at his disposal (assuming Spurs take the option to sign Tel permanently), which means that the Lilywhites are unlikely to spend big on another out-and-out number nine.
One would either expect Tottenham to go for either a top-class winger or a versatile forward who can play across the front three.
