What Trading For DK Metcalf Reportedly Could Cost Patriots

DK Metcalf would be a game-changer for the Patriots, but it would require a lot of heavy lifting from New England to bring the star wide receiver to Foxboro, Mass.

A report on Wednesday claimed the Seahawks planned to explore a trade for Metcalf after the two-time Pro Bowl selection asked out of Seattle. The rumor sent shockwaves around the football world mere days after a separate report claimed the Patriots “kicked the tires” on a potential deal for Metcalf.

So, what would it take for New England to add the 27-year-old to Drake Maye’s arsenal? The Athletic’s Dianna Russini on Thursday reported the Seahawks are seeking a first-round pick and a third-round selection in a potential blockbuster. And Metcalf, who can become a free agent after the 2025 season, reportedly wants a new contract with an average annual value of “around $30 million.”

That obviously would be a hefty all-around cost for the Patriots, but Metcalf’s numbers speak for themselves. He averaged 1,054 receiving yards and eight touchdowns per season over his first six campaigns. Metcalf also doesn’t turn 28 until mid-December, so any team that traded for him likely would be landing a player with a ton left in the tank.

That said, high-end draft capital is at a premium for a rebuilding team like New England and it could use all the salary cap space it has to address a variety of needs. Thus, a pursuit of Metcalf will be a very tough call for Eliot Wolf and company.
