Ange Postecoglou finds silver lining for Tottenham after Cristian Romero’s controversial Argentina call-up
Cristian Romero’s international call-up puts Spurs in a tricky position, with fans left questioning the timing of his return. Ange Postecoglou, however, has made his stance clear—Tottenham have no control over national team selections.
Earlier this week, Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero, who had only just returned to training after spending 78 days on the sidelines, received a call-up from his national team, Argentina.
Romero’s call-up triggered mixed reactions from Spurs supporters, many of whom questioned the defender’s commitment to the Lilywhites.
Of course, their concerns are understandable—after all, the centre-back has not played for the club since December last year.
Ange Postecoglou finds a silver lining for Tottenham
With Cristian Romero being a key figure in Argentina’s squad, it was always likely that he would be included in Lionel Scaloni’s plans for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, himself a former national team manager, has now shared his thoughts on the matter.
Speaking to football.london, he admitted that the club had no say in the decision. He said: “I’ve been in the game for 26 years, both as a club and international coach, and one thing we never have control over is whether a player gets called up,
“They can call players up even if they are injured. If he gets a few games in before, and him getting a few more games could help us because he has not played a lot of football.”
Cristian Romero’s national call-up will not be blocked
While we had a strong opinion that Spurs should have blocked Romero’s Argentina call-up, Postecoglou’s comments make it clear that their hands are tied.
Now, Spurs fans can only hope that the Argentine centre-back avoids further injury and that he uses this opportunity to regain match fitness ahead of a crucial period for the club.
