Tottenham fans will love what Dele Alli just did for the first time in 735 days
Tottenham fan favourite Dele Alli is now extremely close to returning to the pitch for the first time in two years, with the attacking midfielder named in the matchday squad for Como at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.
Dele last played a competitive game in February of 2023 on loan at Besiktas, with the midfielder’s injury troubles playing havoc on his hope of a comeback. The former Tottenham and England star hadn’t even made a matchday squad in 735 days.
There remains a lot of goodwill among Spurs fans for Dele, who gave them some amazing memories during his seven years at the club. That is why Tottenham supporters all over the world have been saddened to see him go through such a difficult journey.
The midfielder has yet to play for Como since joining the Serie A club in January, and the club’s manager, Cesc Fabregas, even hinted last month that Dele may not return until next season.
Tottenham cult hero Dele Alli takes huge step towards a return
However, it looks like the former Tottenham man has made major progress over recent weeks as Dele Alli was named by Fabregas in the matchday squad for Como’s trip to Roma on Sunday.
Dele remained an unused substitute in the game as the home side came from a goal down to emerge 2-1 winners.
While the 28-year-old might not have made it to the pitch in Rome, his inclusion in the squad suggests that he has recovered from his injury woes, and it is just a matter of time before he is back playing.
Dele will be eased into proceedings by Como
Given that Dele has not played for two years, Fabregas will be wary of throwing him straight into the team and would want him to use him as a substitute on a few occasions before considering naming him in the starting eleven.
Como’s priority will be to ensure Dele’s body does not break down and the intensity of his work will have to be managed, similar to what Tottenham have done with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero over recent months.
However, seeing his name on the teamsheet will put a smile on a lot of Spurs fans’ faces, and they will be hoping that it is not too long before we see the attacking midfielder play with the kind of cheeky flair that comes so naturally to him.
