What people behind-the-scenes at Tottenham think about ‘scary’ Djed Spence
Alasdair Gold reveals that there is genuine excitement at Tottenham about the potential of Djed Spence, with many convinced that he can become one of the best full-backs across the Premier League.
There was a lot of excitement at Spurs when Djed Spence arrived from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022, with the defender seen as one of the best young talents in the EFL at the time.
The full-back’s career has not really taken off over the last couple of years as successive Tottenham managers have shipped him out on loan.
However, Spence has managed to win over Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff this season and has grabbed the opportunities that have come his way with both hands.
The Englishman has been Tottenham’s best player over the last few months, with Postecoglou even hinting Spence is ready for England ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Huge excitement at Spurs about Spence’s potential
Spence’s performances have certainly excited the Tottenham fan base, with many supporters not happy to see him rested from the starting eleven against Man City on Wednesday.
Alasdair Gold has now revealed that it is not just the fans who are excited about the defender’s growth but also those who work within the club. Many at Hotspur Way believe that he is capable of becoming one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.
The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast about Spence: “It’s so important in that system as well. I feel like, from what I understand, there’s a real belief that now if he keeps pushing on from within the club, there’s this belief that he could be one of the best fullbacks around in the Premier League especially because he’s got everything in his game.
“But if you can train him up on all the defensive aspects and concentration aspects and everything as well, he could be such an all-rounder. He’s like a scary talent. What I would say if I’m going to have any slight… I don’t even think it’s criticism, but it’s just kind of pointing out, I didn’t actually think he looked as good on the right as he does on the left, weirdly.”
Djed Spence is now Tottenham’s first-choice full-back
Postecoglou’s decision to rest Spence against Man City, alongside Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski, is evidence that the Australian now views the full-back as one of his most important players.
The former Middlesbrough man will be one of the first names on the teamsheet in Tottenham’s upcoming Europa League clashes against Alkmaar.
The big question is whether it will be Pedro Porro or Destiny Udogie who makes way. Based on Porro’s defensive struggles against City, the Spaniard might find himself dropping to the bench against the Eredivisie side next week.
