Paul Merson thinks Tottenham could set a new club record against Man City

0 3

Paul Merson has made his prediction for Tottenham Hotspur’s upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester City and he believes Spurs have a chance to achieve a new club record.

Tottenham are hoping to extend their winning Premier League run to four matches against a Manchester City side in poor form. They will not be short on confidence, having already beaten last season’s champions in both the league and the Carabao Cup.

Spurs have had great success against both Manchester clubs this season, having recently defeated Manchester United for the third time this season. They have also beaten Manchester City, destroying them 4-0 in the league and securing a 2-1 cup win thanks to goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr.

A win for Tottenham on Wednesday would mean they have defeated both City and United home and away for the first time ever in a Premier League season. Having also beaten both teams in the League Cup, six wins from six games would be an impressive accomplishment.

Paul Merson has tipped Spurs to defeat Manchester City again

Arsenal legend Paul Merson is rarely shy of criticising Spurs, but he believes they will once again triumph over Man City, completing a new club achievement.

Merson has expressed concerns with City’s lack of attacking threat, while he believes Tottenham’s frontline could cause them some problems.

Making his predictions on Sportskeeda, he said: “Manchester City reminded me of Arsenal against West Ham when they lost to Liverpool. I mean, they could have played till the next morning and they still wouldn’t score!

“Jeremy Doku beat Trent Alexander-Arnold so many times, yet he failed to create a clear-cut chance. It’s alright going past players, but if you can’t create chances at the end of it, what’s the point?

“I expect Tottenham to trouble City. If Erling Haaland isn’t fit and it becomes an end-to-end game, I have to back Spurs for the win.

“City have no firepower, they don’t look like scoring at all! The new signings have not worked for them either.

“They obviously can’t go out and spend £70-80 million on new players like how they used to due to Financial Fair Play (FFP). No one is ever going to have another squad like City from their golden years due to FFP. I mean, they had two proper £70 million-worth internationals for each position during that time.

“I don’t want to sound horrible, but Nico Gonzalez looks a bit lost in that City midfield. He got destroyed against Real Madrid and I’m not looking at him going, ‘wow, what a signing’. Even Abdukodir Khusanov has struggled so much. I can’t remember any of the big teams wanting to sign Khusanov. If he was really good, surely PSG would have bought him!

“City can still finish in the top four, but they have some tricky fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Brighton. If they fail to beat Spurs, they could be playing catch up to other teams by the time they face these sides and that’s never a good thing.

Tottenham’s front three have goals in them and with Son Heung-min playing with a lot of confidence, Spurs will definitely trouble City.”

Merson’s prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Manchester City

Manchester City could still be a challenge for Tottenham

Despite Merson’s heavy criticism of Man City, they have had a tough run of fixtures recently, coming up against the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool. Tottenham on the other hand have not faced a top-half team in the league since their North London derby defeat in mid-January.

Ange Postecoglou’s men will be encouraged by both team’s recent results, but they must beware not to be complacent. City may be wounded, but on their day they are still a team that can be very dangerous to their opponents.
