Chelsea ‘determined’ to beat Tottenham to pricey England international

Chelsea are reportedly extremely keen to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the services of a centre-back in the summer, and the Blues have one trick up their sleeve which could aid their efforts to do so.

Tottenham bolstered their backline with the addition of Kevin Danso in January, but they also reportedly tried to push through a sensational deal for another centre-back in the dying stages of the window.

It was widely reported that Spurs had submitted an offer of £70m for Marc Guehi, which was sent back by Crystal Palace, who did not want to lose a key man so late in the window.

Since then, various sources have suggested that Tottenham might go back in for Marc Guehi when the transfer window opens in the summer.

The Mirror have now claimed that Palace turned down several bids for Guehi over the last year, including approaches from Tottenham during the recent transfer window and one from Newcastle last summer.

However, Chelsea are expected to join the race for the 24-year-old in the summer, with the Blues determined to move to the front of the queue for the player.

Guehi came through the Chelsea academy, and it is explained that Enzo Maresca is a big fan of the centre-back and wants to bring him back to the club.

With the defender set to enter the final year of his contract this June, the West London club sense an opportunity to bring him back to Stamford Bridge, where he is expected to become a leader of their defence.

Chelsea have one ace up their sleeve in Guehi race

The outlet reveals that when Chelsea sold Guehi to Palace for £18m back in 2021, they inserted a clause in the deal to allow them to match any offer from another club for the player.

Additionally, they also inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause, and while that would be complicated by the fact that they themselves want to buy the player back, it could mean that they would have to pay a lower fee than some of their rivals.

It thus appears based on this update that the Blues are in the driving seat to beat Spurs and Newcastle to Guehi’s services in the summer.
