Texas football moves Sam Houston game up a week to get bye before SEC play in 2025
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas Longhorns athletic director Chris Del Conte made a savvy move to help best position the football team for the 2025 Southeastern Conference season.
Del Conte announced that the Longhorns' nonconference game with Sam Houston State is now a week earlier, moving from Sept. 27 to Sept. 20, to give the team a bye week before opening SEC play Oct. 4 against Florida on the road. The kickoff time is still to be determined from DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Texas opens the 2025 season Aug. 30 against the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, and then they'll return home for the following three weeks to take on San Jose State, UTEP and the Bearkats before an open week.
The Bearkats will be coming off a bye before traveling to Austin. They play a game in "Week 0" on Aug. 23 against Western Kentucky, a Conference USA matchup, before taking on UNLV and Hawaii before their first open week. Sam Houston will have another open week after the game against the Longhorns before they return to C-USA play against New Mexico State.
Sam Houston finished 2024 at 10-3 overall and 6-2 in C-USA with a 31-26 win in the New Orleans Bowl over Georgia Southern.
