MLB Insider Drops Notable Nugget About Red Sox’s Alex Bregman Pursuit

The clock continues to tick as teams including the Boston Red Sox await the decision of free agent third baseman Alex Bregman.

Boston is among multiple clubs interested in signing the two-time World Series champion to complete its offseason, but it’s been an ongoing waiting game. Bregman would fill the Red Sox’s need of a right-handed bat, he’d improve the team’s defense tremendously and the 30-year-old has plenty of playoff experience suitable to fill a leadership role. Now, it’s up to Bregman and agent Scott Boras to make a decision.

Bregman is rumored to be in search of a multi-year offer and he’s reportedly already turned down a six-year offer to return to the Houston Astros. Yet, despite Houston’s front-office optimism in recent weeks, it seems as though the Red Sox might have an upper hand.

“Alex Bregman, who is likely to land with the Red Sox, (Chicago) Cubs or (Detroit) Tigers soon; sources in the Astros organization are skeptical he’ll return to Houston,” ESPN’s Buster Olney reported. “If he goes to Fenway Park, he could pepper the Green Monster while relearning the nuances of playing in the middle infield. If he goes to Chicago — likely on a short-term, Cody Bellinger-type deal — he will have pressure to produce. And if he signs with the Tigers, it would be Detroit’s de facto announcement that with Tarik Skubal two years from free agency, the team’s window to win is now, and the expensive signing of Bregman would be an all-in move.”

There are multiple incentives for Bregman to sign with the Red Sox aside from the Green Monster, which he’s well familiar with. Bregman spent the 2017 season alongside Boston manager Alex Cora during their World Series title run in Houston. Bregman would be an extremely valuable member of the organization, both on and off the field as youngsters and up-and-coming prospects could pick Bregman’s brain amid their early developments. Plus, the potential addition of Bregman could make the Red Sox legitimate contenders.

Boston has an improved bullpen through its Justin Wilson and Aroldis Chapman additions and the starting rotation was upgraded by way of Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval. With Bregman, a proven winner and respected veteran possibly welcomed to the clubhouse, the Red Sox could soar to new heights and dig themselves out of their postseason drought in 2025.
