Why Man United had a good January transfer window - opinion

0 4

Manchester United needed to bolster their squad in the January transfer window and dispose of some players.

The club needed a natural left wing-back and forward. They were able to get a left wing-back, securing the services of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.

However, they failed to sign Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku and Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel.

This could prove costly at the end of the season, as the club have struggled for goals in the Premier League.

Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, the club’s two senior strikers, have scored five league goals between them.

While signing a quality forward would have helped, the Dorgu’s signing is a massive positive. He can play in several positions, making him a valuable asset for United.

The arrival of young centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal is another positive. He was regarded as one of the best youngsters in London in 2024.

Heaven’s arrival has now become more important due to the potential long-term injury to centre-back Lisandro Martinez.

United were also able to reduce their wage bill by getting rid of some players.

Marcus Rashford was loaned to Aston Villa, who will cover most of his wages. Tyrell Malacia and Antony also departed the club on loan to PSV Eindhoven and Real Betis respectively.

Midfielders Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and centre-back Victor Lindelof, who are not part of manager Ruben Amorim’s plans, are still at the club but are expected to leave in the summer.

Man United could have done better in the last transfer window, but their outgoing business was a step in the right direction.

The club have put themselves in a good position to complete a major rebuild of the squad in the summer.
