NFL Rumors: Cowboys Hire Ex-Patriots Assistant On Jerod Mayo’s Staff
Nearly every coach on Jerod Mayo’s staff with the New England Patriots had to find a new job this offseason.
It didn’t take long for Tiquan Underwood to land back on his feet, though.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported Monday evening that Underwood is joining first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s staff with the Dallas Cowboys as an assistant wide receivers coach — it was the same position he held in his lone season with the Patriots. Breer noted Underwood received interest from Florida State, but decided to stay in the NFL.
It wasn’t a season to write home about for New England’s wideouts in 2024. While the Patriots got improved play from DeMario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte, rookie Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker provided next-to-nothing, which didn’t inspire confidence about their all-important development.
The Cowboys will be the third team for Underwood in his young coaching career. Aside from his brief stint with the Patriots, Underwood served as a quality control coach with the Miami Dolphins.
He does have experience in the college ranks. Underwood got his first coaching job with Lafayette College in 2018 as a wide receivers coach. He also spent two seasons coaching wideouts on Greg Schiano’s staff at Rutgers before moving on to Pittsburgh, where he was the pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
The Patriots reportedly filled their vacant wide receivers coaching position Monday by tabbing Todd Downing for the job.
