Ange Postecolgou’s future could impact pursuit of one Tottenham target

The decision Tottenham Hotspur make on Ange Postecoglou’s future over the coming weeks and months is expected to have a significant effect on whether the club wrap up a deal for a 24-year-old midfielder.

Tottenham are the favourites to land Johnny Cardoso

Reports over recent days seem to suggest that Johnny Cardoso is unlikely to leave Real Betis before the end of the current transfer window.

If the midfielder stays put at the La Liga club, that would put Spurs in the driver’s seat in the race for his signature as the Lilywhites have the option to sign Cardoso for just €25m (£21m) at the end of the season.

It is an option that Tottenham acquired last summer as part of the deal they agreed with Betis for the transfer of Giovani Lo Celso to the Spanish side, but it turns out that one factor could have a big influence on whether the club activate the option for Cardoso.

How Ange Postecoglou’s future could affect Cardoso deal

This update comes from AS, who also confirm that Cardoso will remain at Betis as Manuel Pellegrin’s side have no plans to sanction a sale in the coming days.

They too point to Tottenham’s £21m clause, which becomes active in June, and suggest the player might be destined for North London.

However, interestingly, the outlet explains that it was Postecoglou who was particularly keen on bringing Cardoso to Hotspur Way.

If the Australian is not at the club by the end of the season, it could thus sway the Premier League side’s decision on whether to take up the option, with the decision likely to be made by their next head coach.

Tottenham likely to activate Johnny Cardoso option

Irrespective of who the next Spurs manager is (assuming Postecoglou is sacked), the club are likely to take up the option to sign Cardoso.

One would also assume that Tottenham would hire a head coach who plays possession-based football in order to have some tactical continuity.

Even if they do not, the 24-year-old midfielder is tactically versatile and should be able to do a job in a number of different systems, and at that price, he seems like too good an option to pass up on.
