Tottenham open late talks with Brentford to sign striker
Tottenham’s need for a forward may have forced them to leverage their financial strength against their upcoming Premier League opponents. Spurs have reportedly initiated talks with Brentford for their forward, Yoane Wissa – a deal which could ‘shake up’ the Premier League.
Tottenham are looking for versatile forward-line coverage
It has been clear since the start of the January transfer window that Tottenham have been looking for a forward who can add depth in multiple positions in their attacking line.
Previous links to Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Rashford have made it clear they would like a player who can play wide as well as provide support for Dominic Solanke.
With Solanke now injured and Richarlison’s minutes being managed, it seems Tottenham have set their sights on a different name as the window closes.
Spurs are pursuing a deal for Yoane Wissa
According to FootMercato, Tottenham have approached Brentford with the intention of signing Yoane Wissa. Nottingham Forest also voiced interest in the Bees striker earlier in the transfer window.
Having scored 11 goals in the Premier League this season, Wissa is tied 7th in the top goalscorer table.
A deal for the 28-year-old in January would be difficult to achieve, but if Spurs can pull it off, it could be a defining moment of the season.
Yoane Wissa doesn’t fit Tottenham’s transfer ideology
Ange Postecoglou has repeatedly voiced the fact that the squad needs help in the transfer window. Yoane Wissa feels like the kind of signing that Tottenham do not usually pursue.
At 28 years old, Wissa is peak age and Brentford will demand a significant fee for his transfer mid-season.
Tottenham’s approach of signing peak-age players has shifted in recent times for players in starting positions such as Solanke or James Maddison. However, Wissa would arguably lean more towards squad depth than a guaranteed starting player.
Perhaps the urgency of the window closing is forcing Tottenham’s hand, but it has been proven countless times that transfer deals made out of desperation, rarely work out.
