Queen’s Park 1-1 St Mirren (2-3 on Penalties)

The young Spiders suffered Scottish Youth Cup heartache, crashing out of the competition on penalties after a hard fought 1-1 draw in 90 minutes at Lochinch.

On a cold but dry Sunday afternoon at Lochinch, in front of a crowd of several hundred, it was the Spiders who made the first venture up the park inside the opening two minutes but Godspower Oguama was penalised for a foul on Saints defender Billy Hutchison just inside the visitors box.

The visitors won their first corner of the match after good play down the right from Farquhar and Mooney. It would ultimately come to nothing with the delivery overhit and going out for a goal kick.

Queen’s had their first attempt at goal in the 12th minute when Falls played a one to with McGinlay on the edge of the box before firing a half volley off target. From the resulting goal kick, Saints went straight up the park and Mooney fired just wide from the edge of the box.

The end to end start to the game continued with neither keeping really being tested until the 20th minute when Oguama cut in off the right for the Spiders before seeing a powerful low cross turned away by the Saints keeper. The Spiders failed to capitalise from the resulting corner with Thomson firing off target.

It took until the half hour mark for the visitors to properly test Milosz Sliwinski in the Queen’s goal but the young keeper was ready when called on, diving down low to his right to deny St Mirren what looked like being the opening goal.

Minutes later the visitors were awarded a penalty when Evan Mooney was adjudged to have been fouled in the box. Mooney would be the one to take the spot kick, firing a low effort into the bottom corner. Sliwinski looked to have got his fingertips to it but there was too much on the strike and the visitors went ahead.

As the half time drew closer the Spiders continued to look for a way back into the game and on the 40 minute mark Connor Falls was denied by Tamosevicius in the Saints goal after a brilliant run down the right. The youngster came in off the wing only to see his effort blocked.

Just two minutes later the Spiders were level and it was nothing less than their play deserved. Leo Clark picked it up on the right, played a one two with Aiden McGinley before coming in off the right and firing a powerful effort beyond the Saints keeper from a very tight angle.

The young Spiders finished the half in search of a second goal but despite the pressure and a number of corners they would go in level at the break.

Oguama was first to go close for the Spiders who started the second half the way they finished the first, on the front foot. Two minutes into the half Finn Coyle Morrow worked some space down the left before finding Oguama inside the box, his effort was on target but it was a comfortable save for Tamosevicius.

The Spiders continued to press for a second and McGinley went close with 53 minutes on the clock. Oguama chased a long ball down the left and cut it back to McGinely who’s deflected effort from 18 yards out almost made it under the Saints keeper who just about done enough before gathering at the second attempt.

Finn Coyle Morrow continued to look a threat down the left for Queen’s and with an hour played, flashed a terrific ball across the face of the visitors goal. It was there to be tapped home but unfortunately for him, none of his teammates had gambled and got themselves into the right position.

As the second half wore on, Queen’s continued to enjoy a lot of possession inside the visitors half and created a number of decent chances but ultimately failing to really trouble the St Mirren keeper.

It took until the 75th minute for the visitors to engineer their period of pressure of the second half but their attacks were well dealt with by the Spiders backline, and keeper Sliwinski who denied McCormick from close range.

With just minutes left of the 90 Sliwinski was forced into action to deny the visitors what would have been a winner. Mooney fired a low cross into the Queen’s box which deflected off Cole Burke but quick reactions from the Spiders keeper kept the scores level.

The visitors then went agonisingly close in the third minute of added time through Carrick Mcevoy, thankfully for the young Spiders, the Saints’ defender’s powerful effort came off the bar before the full time whistle went.

The wait for the penalties

Queen’s would be first up in the shoot out but Aiden McGinley saw his effort well saved by Tamosevicius to give the visitors an early advantage. Crrick Mcevoy then stepped up for St Mirren only to be denied by an equally good save from Milosz Sliwinski. Connor Falls scored the Spiders second penalty before Lyle Hunter levelled. The Spiders third penalty, from Sam Maclachlan was saved before Owen Carey put the visitors ahead after three penalties apiece.

Daniel Matheson stepped up to level the scores but this was quickly cancelled out by Struan Thompson who scored for St Mirren. Leo Fisher stepped up to take Queen’s fifth, needing to score to keep the Spiders in it but the youngster saw his effort cannon off the bar to give the visitors the win.

The visitors celebrate the 3-2 penalty shoot out win

Head Coach Charley King commented: “I’m really disappointed for the boys in terms of how the game played out. It’s never easy losing on penalties but i’ve said to them in the dressing room that it should be a learning experience for them. I thought we were the better team but we didn’t take out chances when we were on top. We didn’t manage to get ourselves ahead and ultimately we have paid for that in the end.”

“We dominated the ball for long spells and got ourselves into really good ares but we lacked aggression in those crucial moments inside their box.”
