Adam Schefter Highlights Perk Of Patriots Hiring Josh McDaniels

The Patriots might not have to worry about a common NFL trend that so often sets teams back.

Having a great offensive coordinator obviously is a tremendous asset for any franchise, especially those with young quarterbacks. But as coaches in those roles shine, their head-coaching stock usually grows and in turn makes them more inclined to take a promotion with another organization.

We just saw it with Ben Johnson and Liam Coen, two gifted offensive minds whose standout work as coordinators pushed them to the top of the totem pole in Chicago and Jacksonville, respectively. But as ESPN’s Adam Schefter explained last week on WEEI, the Patriots probably will be set with their talented new offensive coordinator for years to come.

“The great part about it if you’re Mike Vrabel and the Patriots, you’re not worried about someone hiring Josh McDaniels as their head coach,” Schefter said. “To me, it’s the best of both worlds.”

Schefter, of course, was referring to McDaniels’ poor track record as a head coach. The 48-year-old was exceptional on Bill Belichick’s Patriots staffs in the past, but he lasted less than two seasons as the head coach in both Denver and Las Vegas. At this point, NFL teams probably aren’t interested in handing the keys to McDaniels and he might be content as a coordinator.

Of course, the ideal world Schefter described will require McDaniels to pick up where he left off in Foxboro, Mass. And with the current talent situation at One Patriot Place, that won’t be an easy task.
