Kilmarnock 2 Queen’s Park 1

0 12

A 92nd minute winner by Kilmarnock’s Cole Burke denied Queen’s the opportunity to top the Reserve League table.

Queen’s lined up to play Killie, in this top of the table clash, with their latest signing, Ben Jackson, at centre-half.

The opening twenty minutes were stalemate with neither side able to gain the upper hand. The pairing of Ben Jackson and Darryl Carrick looked solid at the back despite never having played together before.

The midfield ‘chess’ game continued, although the wee Spiders were beginning to stretch the Ayrshire side’s defence with Joseph Smith and Timam Scott seeing a lot of the ball down the right wing.

The first chance of the game fell to Killie, in the 18th minute, when they were awarded a free-kick 20 yards out. Ben Brannan’s shot narrowly missed the far post.

The deadlock was broken in the 32nd minute. Timam Scott drove to the edge of the Kilmarnock box, played a through ball to Max Thompson who smashed the ball into the top corner of the net to give Queen’s the lead.

Queen’s continued to push for a second with Michael Collie and Aiden McGinlay working hard to dominate the midfield.

Killie put Queen’s under pressure in the final five minutes of the half and their efforts were rewarded in the 42nd minute. Jack Wills pulled off a great save from a header, pushing the ball away for a corner. The corner was delivered beyond the back post where Ben Brannan headed the ball back into the Queen’s six-yard box. Kilmarnock’s Ethan Brown with his back to the goal turned and hit the ball home from close range.

The second half started in the same manner as the first, with both sides battling for dominance.

The wee Spiders were using both wings of Rugby Park to test Killie, with Magnus Mackenzie and Josiah Sowa down the left and Timam Scott down the right stretching the Ayrshire side’s back line.

In the 77th minute, Reece Evans intercepted a loose ball played out of the Killie defence and played in Lennon Connolly. Lennon’s shot brought off a good save by Corey Armour, in goal for Kilmarnock.

Five minutes later Queen’s had a great opportunity to take the lead when Timam Scott delivered a superb cross to Ross Mclean at the back post. However, this time Ross’ header was effectively dealt with by the Killie keeper.

Just when it looked like the game would finish all square Kilmarnock scored the winner in the 92nd minute. From a throw-in on the right, the ball was delivered to the edge of the box for Cole Burke to hit on the volley. With the aid of a deflection the ball sailed past Jack Wills and into the net.
