Women’s Beanpot Wrap: Northeastern Dynasty Reaches Three-Peat With Win Vs. BU

BOSTON — The crown still fits for Northeastern as the Huskies completed a Dunkin’ Women’s Beanpot three-peat Tuesday night with a 4-0 win over Boston University in front of a record 13,279 fans at TD Garden.

Northeastern, which now owns 20 Beanpot titles, improved to 15-8-1 while BU fell to 14-8-1.

ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
Despite a strong effort from BU, Northeastern’s Beanpot reign lives on.

No other school in the tournament between Boston college hockey powers had the same type of high-end talent mixed with depth as the Huskies, which is why they hoisted the trophy once again.

Northeastern scored eight goals in its two tournament games with those tallies coming from seven different scorers. The Huskies have stars — see Skylar Irving — but their lineup from top to bottom, including freshman goaltender Lisa Jönsson, sparked on the elevated stage.

Jönsson and BU goalie Callie Shanahan tangled in a goalie duel for most of the first period before a shot from Lily Yovetich deflected off a stick of a Terriers defender and into the back of the net for a fluky goal.

BU stayed within a goal, but it suffered a back-breaking end to the second period with Lily Shannon and Jaden Bogden scoring 40 seconds apart to take a commanding lead.

Shannon was the only Northeastern player to score two goals in the tournament as each member of the Huskies truly had a hand in bringing the Beanpot trophy back to Huntington Avenue.

PLAY OF THE GAME
Pick any one of Jönsson’s saves. She was spectacular between the pipes to post a 30-save shutout. The freshman netminder from Sweden, who won the Bertagna Award given to the tournament’s top goalie, stonewalled a couple of rebound chances in the first period by sprawling around in the crease and then used terrific fundamentals to deny a point-blank bid in the second period.

UP NEXT
Northeastern won’t get a ton of time to celebrate its Beanpot title. The Huskies are back on the ice Friday when they open up a home-and-home series with Merrimack. Puck drop from Matthews Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

BU next plays on Friday as well as they also begin a home-and-home series with the Holy Cross. Puck drop for the first contest is set for 6 p.m.
