Patriots Reportedly Tab Familiar Face To Be Next Offensive Coordinator

You can always go back home. Josh McDaniels certainly is proving that to be the case with the New England Patriots.

Mike Vrabel checked off a major item on his to-do list Friday as the Patriots are hiring McDaniels to be the team’s next offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. It will be McDaniels’ third stint with the Patriots.

McDaniels reportedly interviewed for the position Friday and was viewed as the clear front-runner soon after the Patriots hired Vrabel.

McDaniels, 48, spent last season away from football after two seasons as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. McDaniels returns with plenty of experience under his belt. He spent 13 previous seasons as the Patriots offensive coordinator and also had a two-year stint as the head coach of the Denver Broncos.

McDaniels will be tasked with the all-important job of developing Drake Maye. McDaniels showed he is capable of getting the best out of young quarterbacks during his last run with New England. McDaniels helped Mac Jones turn in a Pro Bowl season when Jones was a rookie in 2021.

There has been a tremendous amount of turnover at the offensive coordinator position for the Patriots. McDaniels will mark the fourth different coordinator for New England in as many seasons.

The Patriots reportedly also interviewed Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown, Los Angeles Chargers passing game coordinator Marcus Brady and Minnesota Vikings assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski for the job.
