Alex Cora Affirms Rafael Devers’ Red Sox Third Base Commitment

BOSTON — Every single week this offseason appears to feature the latest wrinkle to where Rafael Devers will play in 2025.

Don’t worry, it will be in a Red Sox uniform. Which position appears to be a different conversation, despite Boston consistently maintaining the stance of not moving the All-Star slugger off of third base.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora offered his latest update during “Fenway Fest” on how Devers intends to improve defensively at his spot in 2025 to further live up to his megadeal.

“First things first, the most important thing is the shoulders,” Cora told reporters. “They’re in a good place. He hasn’t done much. That’s the reason he’s going to Ft. Myers. We’ve got plenty of time. He’ll be ready.”

Devers moved away from previous years of workouts in Tampa before heading to the Red Sox complex. He’ll be in Ft. Myers, Fla. before the end of January.

Cora’s kept the door open on several occasions to add a player that plays third base, most notably with rumors surrounding Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado. For now, Devers, who had some ironic value with MLB Network, is the present and future of the position for the Red Sox.

“If we have to have conversations about positions,” Cora said. “There’s a lot of talk about third basemen, second basemen, whatever. If we get to that point, before we get to that point, we’ll talk to Raffy. We’ll put it that way.”
