Tottenham are looking stronger in defence

Few have doubted the goal-scoring ability of Tottenham this season, but Ange Postecoglou has faced immense scrutiny for his open style of football.

Although Spurs have managed to keep most of their defeats to a one-goal margin, their 6-3 defeat to Liverpool in December is a fine example of what can happen when high-risk play goes wrong.

However, Spurs have looked stronger at the back in recent matches, despite key defenders, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, remaining on the sidelines through injury. With two consecutive clean sheets against Liverpool and Tamworth, the Tottenham backline will be gaining confidence.

One particular positive has been the arrival of Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague. While Ange Postecoglou said the goalkeeper felt a bit ‘rusty’, having not played for his former side since mid-December, he has put in two solid performances for Spurs. One standout feature has been his assertiveness at set pieces, something that Guglielmo Vicario often lacks.

Chris Sutton’s Arsenal vs Tottenham score prediction

Chris Sutton has concerns over Arsenal’s weakened attack, with Bukayo Saka injured. However, he lacks confidence in Tottenham’s defence, despite their recent improved performances of late.

Sutton expects Spurs to concede chances, while the Gunners may adapt and attempt to hit them on the counter.

Making his prediction on BBC Sport, he said: “Arsenal have had a bad week and right now it looks like Tottenham have a better chance of winning a trophy this season than they do.

“People are quite rightly pointing out that the Gunners are missing chances and, with Bukayo Saka out injured, they are just lacking that spark in attack.

“Having said all that, maybe they will find it again here, because I think the way Spurs play will suit Arsenal.

“By that, I mean Mikel Arteta’s side can soak up pressure and counter-attack, and even without Saka or a recognised centre-forward, I think they will get chances in this game. It is whether they take them this time. I am backing them to stick a couple away.

“Of course, this derby is really important to Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham in their situation, but the expansive way they play means it is a tall order to expect an unfamiliar defence and new goalkeeper to step up again.

“I do see Spurs scoring, but they give up a lot of chances. Arsenal have to win this game to hang on in the title race, and I think they will.”

Tottenham’s attack could be the biggest concern

While Sutton has chosen to focus on Tottenham’s openness, there have been matches this season when their attack has faltered, particularly when they have been the visitors.

Scoring 16 goals in nine Premier League away matches is not bad, but take the 5-0 and 4-0 wins over Southampton and Manchester City respectively out and there have been a number of games when Spurs have not looked threatening.

The 0-0 scoreline after 90 minutes in the FA Cup against Tamworth was yet another occasion when Tottenham became frustrated on the road. If they are to beat Arsenal, goals are a requirement.
