Napoli explore deal to sign Timo Werner despite Tottenham loan

0 0

Napoli are actively seeking reinforcements in attack, with exploratory talks reportedly held for none other than Tottenham’s Timo Werner.

Napoli’s need for attacking reinforcements

The January transfer window is gaining momentum, and clubs across Europe are working tirelessly to strengthen their squads ahead of the second half of the season.

Among these clubs, Napoli find themselves in a critical position as they prepare for life without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has expressed his desire to leave the club.

Last week, Kvaratskhelia made his intentions clear, prompting Napoli manager Antonio Conte to grant the Georgian winger the green light for a transfer.

Reports suggest that Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on finalising the deal, with only minor details left to be resolved.

The departure of such a pivotal player has left Napoli searching for a replacement who can step into the void left behind.

Napoli sporting director Mauro Manna is now considering several options, with potential targets including Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Tottenham forward Timo Werner.

The Italian club reportedly baulked at United’s £70 million valuation of Garnacho, viewing it as prohibitive. Consequently, Napoli have shifted their focus towards a more pragmatic solution, with Werner emerging as a feasible option for a mid-season loan.

Napoli’s interest in Tottenham forward Timo Werner

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli have initiated exploratory talks regarding Timo Werner, who is currently on loan at Tottenham from RB Leipzig.

This season, Werner has struggled to secure a prominent role under Ange Postecoglou, and with Tottenham dealing with injuries ahead of their London derby against Arsenal, any movement in Werner’s situation is unlikely to occur before Wednesday’s fixture.

The report suggests that once the derby concludes, Napoli could receive the necessary green light to advance discussions.

Tottenham’s injury struggles and Werner’s uncertain future

Ironically, Werner himself has now picked up a hamstring injury at Tottenham, so it remains to be seen whether that impacts any Napoli interest. Ange Postecoglou has also denied the idea that Werner could leave Spurs in January.

While Napoli consider Werner as a potential reinforcement, Tottenham are grappling with their own challenges. Ange Postecoglou’s side have suffered from injuries to key players, highlighting the need for greater depth in their squad.

Despite Werner’s versatility, his performances at Tottenham have failed to impress, leading the club to seek additional cover in the forward line. The German’s inability to establish himself in Postecoglou’s plans serves as a stark indicator of his standing within the team.

If Tottenham are unable to facilitate his departure in January, the German international is likely to return to Leipzig at the end of his loan spell.
