Tottenham’s young players deliver a statement performance

Tottenham‘s young players were always going to have to step up if the Lilywhites had any chance of overcoming Liverpool, a side who demolished them 6-3 just over two weeks ago.

That is exactly what happened, with the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall delivering masterful displays and showing just why there is so much excitement surrounding them.

It was Bergvall who scored an 86th late match-winner for the home side, with the Swede getting just rewards for an all-action display, while Gray seems to be growing as a player with each outing.

Ange Postecoglou reveals his Spurs nightmare scenario

Postecoglou was asked about Gray’s solid and composed performance in the heart of defence, a position that the youngster had not played before this season.

The Tottenham head coach remarked that he is very excited with the way the versatile Leeds academy graduate and Bergvall are developing. He further confessed that he would like to be around at N17 to manage the pair when they developed into finished products in two or three years.

When asked about the way Gray has fitted in seamlessly at centre-back, Postecoglou told Football.London: “And in a position he’s never played mate, you know, he’s never played. An 18-year-old. Name another Premier League team that’s got two 18-year-olds and one playing out of position consistently.

“I’m so happy they’re at our football club and you know, in two or three years’ time, I just pray to God I’m the beneficiary of their talent, mate, because if somebody else is getting it, I won’t be happy.”

A lot of Spurs fans will be eating their words

A good portion of the Tottenham fan base questioned the club’s summer recruitment strategy and the logic of spending a significant portion of the transfer budget on two teenagers.

The reality is that Bergvall and Gray were never going to hit the ground running like a seasoned pro like Dominic Solanke.

However, the upside of a transfer strategy of signing the best young talents in world football is the possibility of them blossoming into world-class players.

While Bergvall and Gray still have a long way to go, the experiences they have had over the last six months at just 18 years of age will do wonders for their development.
