Red Sox Rumors: Journeyman Reliever On Boston’s ‘Radar’
The Red Sox are still doing work on the margins.
Boston reportedly has checked in with journeyman reliever Phil Maton, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. It’s just another name on the long, long list of options they’ve explored, according to Cotillo.
Maton, 31, has spent time with the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians, Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets since first making it to the big leagues in 2017. It’s been pretty up and down for him since, as he curated a 4.16 ERA across 415 total appearances.
Tampa Bay traded him to New York this past season, where he posted a 2.51 ERA with 30 strikeouts across 28 2/3 innings pitched. The Mets made a run to the National League Championship Series, where the veteran allowed two earned runs across three appearances.
The Red Sox have already acquired a few bullpen pieces this winter, including Justin Wilson, Aroldis Chapman, Jovani Morán and Noah Davis.
