Tottenham have a goalkeeper dilemma

Injuries and absences have caused strife in areas all over the Tottenham squad, goalkeeper is no exception.

Guglielmo Vicario fracturing his foot was an unaccountable misfortune. He has already missed more games from this injury than any previous injury in his career.

This has been exacerbated over the last week by Fraser Forster catching a bug which kept him bed-ridden and led to him missing out on Tottenham’s loss to Newcastle in the Premier League.

Soon to play Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, Ange Postecoglou has a dilemma about who to select in goal.

Brandon Austin or Antonin Kinsky likely to play against Liverpool

According to Jay Harris on X, Fraser Forster had returned to first-team training after his illness. However, in his press conference, Ange Postecoglou did not include Forster’s name amongst those available for the Carabao Cup fixture.

Harris concluded from this that starting against Liverpool will either be Brandon Austin, making his second competitive start for Tottenham or new signing Antonin Kinsky may make his debut.

Postecoglou did confirm that having received his work permit, Kinsky was available to play but did remind everyone that the 21-year-old only arrived on Sunday. The Wednesday fixture may come slightly too soon.

Goalkeeper selection may indicate Spurs’ overall game approach

From Austin’s debut against Newcastle and Kinsky’s statistical profile, Spurs have two goalkeepers with different strengths available for the Liverpool match.

Spurs’ approach against Newcastle led to Austin attempting chips forward to Solanke to bypass Newcastle pressing Spurs’ centre-backs. He also claimed several crosses very well.

On the other hand, Kinsky is a proactive sweeper-keeper, unafraid of holding on to the ball with his feet or playing outside of his area if needed. Postecoglou may opt to play his new signing who has significantly more senior minutes.

However, if he feels his available centre-backs may be pressed hard by Liverpool and is aware of the crosses that may come into the penalty area, Postecoglou could give Austin another opportunity after a strong performance against Newcastle.
