Ange Postecoglou reacts to Heung-min Son contract extension at Spurs
Tottenham announced that they have triggered a one-year extension to Heung-min Son’s contract, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2026. Now Ange Postecoglou has had his say.
Heung-min Son’s Spurs contract extension
Tottenham Hotspur announced that they triggered an available extension clause in Heung-Min Son’s contract. This means that the Spurs captain will be staying at the club for an 11th season.
Son joined in August 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen for £22m. He has made 431 appearances in all competitions and scored 169 goals. He is currently Tottenham’s 4th highest goalscorer of all time.
Son may overtake Bobby Smith in 3rd place by the end of next season, with 36 goals required to do so. However, there may be a more important accolade Son will target during what may be his last year at Spurs.
Ange Postecoglou wants Sonny to leave with silverware
Ange Postecoglou has reacted to Heung-min Son’s Spurs contract extension while setting one key aim for the future.
Speaking before Tottenham’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool, the Spurs boss said (Nizaar Kinsella on X): “The main ambition is to make sure he finishes his career here with some silverware.”
Before the extension was triggered, Son was within the final 6 months of his contract. This meant that he would have been allowed to secure an end-of-contract agreement with non-English clubs.
Spurs are well prepared for a future without Heung-min Son
Moving on from a player like Heung-min Son is not easy. More than being a player of supreme quality, having been at Tottenham for approaching a decade, he and Spurs have become intrinsically tied.
Even if it has now been delayed until 2026, Son’s goodbye at Spurs will be a heartbreaking affair. Nothing can ease a club hero moving on, however, Tottenham are preparing well for the future.
Wilson Odobert was signed as an exciting prospect and Mikey Moore could prove to be a generational talent straight from the Spurs academy. The hope they bring for the future is something that fans can look forward to as they enjoy what may be the last year of Son playing football for Tottenham.
