Patriots Rumors: ‘Front-Runner’ For Head Coach After Jerod Mayo Fired

One candidate has the inside track replace Jerod Mayo as head coach, and it won’t come as much of a surprise to Patriots fans.

The Athletic’s Chad Graff on Sunday evening reported Mike Vrabel, arguably the top coaching candidate this offseason, is the “clear front-runner” to serve as the organization’s next head coach.

The sentiments from Graff surfaced shortly after the Patriots announced the firing of Mayo some 90 minutes following their season finale.

While identifying potential candidates, Graff wrote: “According to league sources, the Patriots are expected to begin their search for a new head coach immediately, and the early signs point to one person. Kraft and company are expected to pursue Mike Vrabel…”

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported the Patriots plan to interview Vrabel, as well.

Vrabel, a Patriots Hall of Famer, would make plenty of sense for the organization given he’s a well-established and proven head coach. Before the firing was made official Sunday, Patriots fans spoke to NESN.com indicating they would be thrilled if the franchise moved on from Mayo and hired Vrabel.
