Tottenham have experienced a difficult campaign

Tottenham Hotspur, under the stewardship of Ange Postecoglou, are facing a difficult season as they sit 11th in the Premier League standings halfway through the 2024-25 campaign.

The team has struggled to find consistent form, having picked up just one point from their last three matches against Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, and Wolves.

Injuries have undoubtedly also played a significant role in this decline, particularly in defence, where key players including Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been sidelined for long spells.

Furthermore, their record shows more defeats than victories, which has only amplified concerns over the club’s direction under the Australian’s management, however, many will argue that the spotlight should firmly be on Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to back the manager with suitable reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Yet, as much as the cries for change ring louder, one crucial element remains: the financial burden associated with sacking Postecoglou in the middle of a difficult season.

How much Spurs would have to pay Ange Postecoglou if he were to be sacked

Everton’s former CEO Keith Wyness has shed light on the financial burden Tottenham would face if they decided to part ways with Ange Postecoglou.

Speaking on the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness highlighted just how expensive it would be to sever ties with the under-pressure manager.

He said: “As I understand it, he’s 18 months into a four-year deal getting paid about £5million a year. You’re looking at about £12million to get rid of him now. It’s a big number, and there could also be compensation payable to any new manager.

“I like Ange, and I hope he can fight this through. He’s been unlucky with injuries, particularly in defence. Taking everything into account, I think he’s going to be given the chance to finish the season.

“There’s no doubt the pressure is building. I think the fans have appreciated what he’s tried to do, but injuries do happen and it spoils the plans.

“The issue is that he hasn’t changed or been flexible around these injuries. He’s carried on being gung-ho going forward.”

A critical juncture for Postecoglou and Tottenham

While Postecoglou’s position remains under scrutiny, there is an understanding within the club that the injury crisis has been a significant factor in Tottenham’s drop in form and performance.

A recent report by Alasdair Gold of Football.London emphasised this, suggesting that the manager’s “saving grace” has been the recognition of the challenges posed by a stretched squad and accumulating fatigue among the players.

The journalist also noted that Tottenham’s relentless fixture schedule has forced Postecoglou to rely heavily on the same core group of players, which has, in turn, affected their ability to sustain his high-intensity playing style.

Nevertheless, the players’ continued commitment to the manager’s methods has been a positive indicator for the club’s hierarchy. However, as he points out, this goodwill will not last indefinitely.

The upcoming period, including the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool and key Europa League fixtures, will likely define Postecoglou’s tenure at the club.

A failure to navigate this challenging stretch successfully could leave the board with no choice but to make a change, despite the financial repercussions.

Ultimately, the onus is on firstly the club’s board to back Postecoglou this month to a degree where he has quality playerrs to come in, not just talent for the furtue. Alongside, this Ange Postecoglou has to demonstrate that he remains the right man for the job—a task that grows increasingly urgent as Tottenham’s season hangs precariously in the balance.
