Tottenham have three-man shortlist to sign new goalkeeper in January
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly on the lookout for a new goalkeeper to serve as a suitable backup to Guglielmo Vicario and have scouted three options in recent weeks.
Will Tottenham sign a goalkeeper in January?
While it is clear that a goalkeeper is on Ange Postecoglou‘s wishlist, the big question is whether Spurs will make the signing in January or wait until the summer to do so.
It was reported by Alasdair Gold a couple of days ago that the Spurs are contemplating whether to sign a temporary stop-gap in January or to pursue a long-term option who can take over from Fraser Forster as Guglielmo Vicario‘s understudy.
However, The Daily Mail claimed on Monday that while additional cover in goal is on Tottenham’s agenda, that is not considered a priority in the January window, with the club focussing on reinforcing their attack and their defensive line instead.
Tottenham have three goalkeepers on their radar
The Times have now revealed become the latest to report on Tottenham’s search for a new shot-stopper.
The outlet claims that while the Lilywhites were initially planning on signing an understudy to Vicario in the summer, they could bring forward their plans to January.
The publication adds that the North London club have scouted Burnley’s James Trafford, Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro over the last few weeks.
While Trafford and Patterson are of a similar profile, being young, English shot-stoppers who are impressing in the EFL, Remiro is the odd one out, being vastly experienced with 373 career appearances across La Liga and the Segunda Division.
What the three targets say about Spurs’ plan
Trafford, Patterson and Remiro are all excellent with the ball at their feet and have the ability to sweep behind a high defensive line.
The Burnley and Sunderland number ones would offer a big advantage over the Spaniard as the club would not want to waste a non-homegrown spot on a backup goalkeeper.
Additionally, none of these three goalkeepers fall into the temporary stopgap bracket, with all of them being long-term options to replace Forster.
