MLB Free Agency Rumors: This Team ‘All In’ On Alex Bregman
The MLB free-agent market is drying up, and only a few marquee players remain.
One of them is Alex Bregman, who initially appeared to have a robust slate of suitors upon the start of the offseason. But after watching other dominos fall around the league, Bregman might only have a few clubs to choose from.
The Red Sox could be one of those teams, as Craig Breslow on Monday indicated Boston still is trying to add an impactful right-handed bat. However, the Red Sox might not be the franchise most motivated to sign the star third baseman.
“The Tigers have strong interest in third baseman Alex Bregman,” the Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold wrote in a column published Sunday. “In fact, the Tigers appear to be all-in on Bregman. Both sides are engaged in ongoing discussions with mutual interest, but there has been a gap in value as Bregman’s market narrows.”
Detroit was rumored to still be interested in Bregman immediately after the club signed fellow infielder Gleyber Torres. And the Tigers should be, as they need a third baseman and a veteran leader with championship cachet in their young clubhouse. Bregman also played the first four seasons of his big league career under Detroit manager A.J. Hinch.
The report of a gap in value between Bregman and the Tigers might not be very damning either. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Teoscar Hernández were rumored to be dealing with the same issue before they reunited.
