Tottenham will not sign England international in January – Journalist
Football.London’s Rob Guest has rubbished suggestions that Tottenham Hotspur are currently in talks over signing an English centre-back on loan.
Tottenham reportedly in talks with Serie A club over a deal
Just a few days ago, it was reported that Tottenham had stepped up the pursuit of one central defender, who Ange Postecoglou had allegedly identified as his top target.
The player in question was Ben Godfrey, who has struggled to get much of a look in at Atalanta since joining the club back in the summer.
It was explained that Postecoglou values the 26-year-old’s versatility and that even though other Premier League clubs were also after him, Spurs were leading the race to sign him on loan, having open talks with Atalanta regarding a deal.
Rob Guest responds to Ben Godfrey rumours
This is not the first time that Tottenham have been linked with a move for Godfrey as it was reported back in the summer that the Lilywhites failed with an approach for the Englishman before Atalanta swooped for him.
However, Guest has now rubbished suggestions that Spurs could reignite their pursuit of the former Everton man.
The journalist made it clear on Football.London that Godfrey is not one of the names on Tottenham’s January wishlist.
Tottenham may prefer a loan signing
While Tottenham may or may not be interested in a deal for Godfrey, the idea of singing a centre-back on loan with an option to buy in the summer would likely be preferred by the club.
Any new centre-back is not going to start ahead of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven when the pair are fit, and it might not make too much sense for the club to spend around £30m on a centre-back to be the fourth or fifth choice.
Additionally, with youngsters like Luka Vuskovic, Alfie Dorrington, and Ashley Phillips coming through, Postecoglou might want to keep his options open on what he wants to do in the summer.
