I cannot ask any more from my Tottenham players – Ange Postecoglou says
Ange Postecoglou confesses that it was extremely frustrating to see Tottenham fail to break down Nottingham Forest, but he explained why he cannot demand any more of his players.
Tottenham’s poor run continues with no end in sight
The game at the City Ground followed a familiar pattern for Spurs, who controlled possession but lacked cutting edge in the final third.
They conceded a poor goal on the counterattack in the 28th minute and from that point onwards, they struggled to break down a resolute and well-organised Forest side, who were happy to defend with men behind the ball and play on the counter.
It is the sort of defeat that Spurs fans have come to expect of late, with the result leaving the Lilywhites in the bottom half of the table.
Ange Postecoglou cannot ask more from Tottenham players
Postecoglou admitted that he did not expect the game to be full of chances, given how Nuno Espirito Santo’s men set up and rued the fact that his side did not get a break in front of goal.
When asked if he is frustrated with the loss, the Spurs head coach told Football.London: “It’s obviously disappointing the defeat, tight game, it was never going to be the kind of game where there would be too many chances. I still thought we had a fair chunk of it where we could have got something out of the game, but it was always going to be a tight game here.
“It was a disappointing goal we conceded, but aside from that the boys worked hard and we tried to generate as many opportunities as we could considering the context of the game and how Forest play, but we just couldn’t get over the top of them.”
The 59-year-old insisted that he cannot demand any more from his troops in terms of effort, given the lack of recovery time between matches.
He continued: “Look we’re asking a lot of this group of players, a lot of these guys are playing every three days. It’s only logical they are not going to be at their sharpest but they are trying and that’s all I can ask of them.”
Postecoglou admits Spurs needed a goal to get a foothold
The Aussie coach pointed out that his team did manage to create a few chances and admitted that his side needed the ball to go into the back of the net to break open the game.
When asked why his free-scoring side failed to find the back of the net, Postecoglou responded: “It’s a bit of, like I said, game state. I kind of knew that if they could get a goal up, it was going to get even tighter for us to find space behind them. It was never going to be a game with a lot of opportunities.
“Having said that, I still thought we created some good ones and we just weren’t able to capitalise on them. The keeper has pulled off a couple of good saves to keep them in the game. We just needed a goal to break them open and we didn’t seem to get it.”
