NFL Insider Shares Update On Jerod Mayo’s Patriots Job Security

Barring a cataclysmic ending to the Patriots’ 2024 season, Jerod Mayo should be back at the helm in New England in 2025.

Mayo was expected to have a relatively long leash in his first campaign as Bill Belichick’s successor. The former linebacker was hand-picked by longtime owner Robert Kraft, who surely was prepared to give Mayo the benefit of the doubt given the state of the rebuild in Foxboro, Mass.

However, immense struggles and avoidable distractions led many fans and media members to wonder if the Patriots could fire Mayo after only one season. That scenario still is on the table, but as NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport outlined Sunday, it’s not terribly likely.

“There are starting to be some questions about the New England Patriots and their head coach Jerod Mayo. Here’s my understanding of this situation: The Krafts want to keep Jerod Mayo,” Rapoport said on “NFL GameDay. “They believe he is the leader of the organization for the future and they knew it would be a multi-year process to get this thing right. That is their stance right now. Now, if things go off the rails, they really struggle and he loses the locker room the last couple games of the season — we’ve seen this thing turn. As of now, the Patriots believe Jerod Mayo is going be there for the future.”

Mayo potentially losing the locker room might not be something ownership has to worry about. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, multiple players recently expressed support for Mayo who’s reportedly managed to keep his roster “united.”

So, it sounds like New England won’t look for a new head coach for the second time in as many years. But after another brutal season, other major changes need to be made at One Patriot Place.
