Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to miss out on an extremely highly rated right-back as it has now emerged that he is set to sign a new deal with his club.

Spurs are big fans of 18-year-old

The player in question is Chelsea academy graduate Josh Acheampong, who made his senior debut for the Blues in their 2-0 win over Spurs towards the end of last season.

That remains the only first-team appearance the young right-back has made for the West London club and it was reported back in the summer Tottenham were plotting a move for him.

TBR Football also revealed in October that Spurs were one of the clubs circling as the 18-year-old’s contract at Stamford Bridge was about to run out, with the outlet adding that Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle and Aston Villa were also maintaining a watching brief.

Enzo Maresca hands blow to Tottenham

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has now confirmed that Acheampong will feature in the club’s upcoming Europa Conference League club.

The Spanish coach offered a significant blow to Tottenham by revealing that the teenager is close to agreeing a new deal with the club.

Maresca said in his most recent press conference about the right-back: “He’s in the squad and is probably going to play from the start [against Astana]. With Josh, it’s quite clear. We all love Josh, the club loves Josh, and I love Josh. We are trying to find an agreement with the player. [A new contract] is close. We are almost there.

Maresca believes Acheampong has a bright future

It is perhaps not surprising that the defender has decided to snub the transfer interest and agree on a new deal, with Maresca admitting to being a big fan of the player.

The Blues boss is convinced that the Tottenham target is going to evolve into a top full-back over the coming years.

Maresca had previously said about Acheampong: “I really like Josh. For me, he can potentially be a top defender in the future.

“With young players, I like to modify them a little bit. Today, they can change really quickly. They can think they are so good, or so bad, but you need to moderate [them].”
