Spurs teenager is ready to take over from James Maddison – Pundit claims

0 0

Don Hutchison believes Ange Postecoglou has already found his replacement for James Maddison should he decide to move the England man on. However, such a decision would surely prove unpopular after Maddison’s heroics against Manchester City.

James Maddison had been struggling for minutes of late

Dejan Kulusevski has made the attacking midfield position his own and Postecoglou has been experimenting with both the Swede and Maddison in the middle of the park at times this season.

The Spurs boss paused that particular experiment a few weeks ago, opting for a more balanced midfield with Kulusevski and Pape Sarr partnering one of Yves Bissouma or Rodrigo Bentancur.

That meant that Maddison had to make do with starts from the bench – until he was thrown back into the XI against Man City and netted a first-half brace, of course.

Don Hutchison says Spurs have found Maddison’s replacement

Hutchison admits that he has been extremely impressed with Mikey Moore whenever he has watched the Tottenham academy graduate this season.

The pundit suggested that despite being just 17 years of age, the attacker can take Maddison‘s place in the squad if the former Leicester City man is moved on.

Hutchison told ESPN FC: “Mikey Moore, when you talk revelation to me, revelation to me is finding someone brand new. And I think Mikey Moore – I’ve worked on Tottenham’s European games this season, he’s played a few of them – has been outstanding.

“I spoke to Tim Sherwood and Jermaine Defoe – they reckon he’s the next one to come from their academy. I think if Ange Postecoglou wants to move James Maddison on in the summer, then Mikey Moore can fill his shoes. I think it could be that good. So I think revelation is a young player, someone brand new. That’s why I am going from Mikey Moore.”

Spurs will not get rid of James Maddison in a million years

While Moore has operated as an attacking midfielder for Tottenham’s Under-18s, he is primarily an out-and-out winger, who looks to drive forward with the ball and take people on.

He is a very different profile to Maddison, and while it is possible that the teenager eventually evolves into a creative midfielder, Postecoglou will likely continue using him on the flanks for now as the youngster continues to learn about the game at the highest level.

I also do not think the Spurs boss will give any thought to moving on Maddison. You can make an argument that Maddison is not well suited to Ange-ball off the ball, but he brings so much to the team in possession. Just look at those two goals and that performance against Man City.

For too long, Spurs have had no strength in depth, and there would be uproar if Maddison went anywhere any time soon. I actually think he will kick on from this period on the bench and hit new heights in the coming weeks.
