Tottenham have appealed FA decision

The FA’s independent regulatory commission hit Bentancur with a seven-match suspension and fined him £100,000 for the racially insensitive comment he made about Heung-min Son back in the summer.

Tottenham confirmed last week that while they accepted the verdict, they have appealed the length of the Uruguayan’s ban.

It has been reported that even if Spurs’ appeal is successful, the suspension is unlikely to be reduced to below six matches, which is the minimum length stipulated for offences of this kind (The Telegraph).

Tottenham optimistic Rodrigo Bentancur ban will be reduced

Ben Jacobs has now also confirmed that Bentancur can only hope to have his ban cut short by one match. However, he explained that Tottenham are optimistic about that result as they know that others across the Premier League are also of the opinion that the verdict is too harsh.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “The minimum suspension for aggravated misconduct is six matches, so even if Spurs are successful, Rodrigo Bentancur will only have one match from his seven-game ban taken off.

“Spurs are optimistic, and know several other clubs sympathise with the severity of the punishment. Spurs will argue Bentancur did not mean any offence in making the remarks, and instead that he was actually being sarcastic, replying in such a manner because he was offended himself and taken aback by the interviewer simply referring to Son as ‘the Korean’.”

When will Bentancur be back if the ban is reduced?

Bentancur has already served one of his seven-match suspension, sitting out Tottenham’s win over Manchester City on Sunday, with six more matches to go.

However, if the suspension is reduced from seven matches to six in total, that will mean that he could be back for Spurs‘ Premier League clash at home against Liverpool on December 22.
