Red Sox Insider Not Ruling Out Blockbuster Addition For Boston

The Red Sox’s significant investment in Rafael Devers apparently could pave the way for another monster move.

Devers, who signed a 10-year extension with Boston in January 2023, is under contract with the storied organization through the 2033 season. In hopes of getting the most out of the three-time All-Star for the duration of the deal, the Red Sox potentially could consider a position change for their franchise cornerstone.

And should Boston eventually go on the hunt for a new third baseman, a certain star at the hot corner could command its attention.

“Don’t rule out some Red Sox interest in Nolan Arenado,” MassLive’s Sean McAdam wrote in a column published Sunday, “There’s been at (least) some internal talk about moving Rafael Devers off third base at some point and Arenado is viewed as a potential Plan B.”

Few play a sharper third base than Arenado, who has 10 career Gold Glove Awards under his belt. But the 33-year-old wasn’t much of an offensive threat the last two seasons, which could make the Red Sox wary about pursuing a player who’s owed $52 million over the next three years.

Not to mention, Boston’s potential interest in Arenado could be impacted by how this offseason pans out. The eight-time All-Star might fall off the Sox’s radar if they go all out to sign Juan Soto.
