Washburn football announces head coaching change
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Washburn football will have a new head coach next season, the university announced Monday.
Craig Schurig, who's been at the helm for the past 22 seasons, wrapped up his career as head coach with Washburn's final game against Northeastern State on Saturday. The Ichabods finished the 2024 season 3-8, and posted a 2-9 record in 2023.
The school says there will be a 'leadership change' effective immediately, and assistant head coach Zach Watkins will be the interim head coach, also effective immediately.
Schurig is the program's all-time winningest coach, with an overall record of 142-109. He's the sixth-longest tenured coach in MIAA history, and posted a 122-91 record against MIAA opponents.
Long-term plans have not been determined yet, according to the university.
