Tottenham’s defensive problems have been clear

While Tottenham statistically have the best attack in the Premier League this season, their defence leaves much to be desired. Conceding 13 goals, Spurs have not come close to league leaders, Liverpool, who have let in just six, and they have the joint worst defence out of the so called big six clubs (Sofascore).

With Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both recently sidelined with injuries, Spurs have had to play with a centre-back pairing of Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies, and they struggled, both in their distribution from the back and in fulfilling their defensive duties, as Spurs were torn to shreds in the first half against Galatasary in the Europa League.

And even Tottenham’s first choice defenders have not been exempt from criticism. Romero’s Instagram post after the Ipswich defeat was met with comments slamming the Spurs vice captain for his performances, while he continued to invoke the wrath of some supporters when he was pictured smiling with Argentina teammate, Lisandro Martinez, later that day (@lisandromartinezzz).

Tottenham are looking to sign a new centre-back

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are looking to improve their defence and have made ‘huge’ funds available to sign a new centre-back, as they look to climb back up the Premier League table after dropping to tenth.

Their need for a defender has grown since they sold Joe Rodon, Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga in the summer, but did not replace them, as they failed to get any deals over the line for their top transfer targets.

And the position is very much a priority for Spurs, with Ange Postecoglou reportedly desperate to secure a new defender to play in the centre of the park (Football Insider).

Tottenham need a new centre-back as early as January

Davies has served Tottenham well, but when Spurs are having to start him alongside Dragusin, who has failed to live up to how highly rated he is by his outspoken agent, there is a major problem and it needs fixing.

Although Spurs have some promising prospects in Luka Vuskovic, who will join the club next summer, and Ashley Phillips who is currently on loan at Championship outfit Stoke City, they need someone who will help bring stability to their backline at the nearest possible opportunity.
