Jerod Mayo Offers Optimistic Update On Disappointing Patriots Rookie

There was a lot of hope placed on the New England Patriots rookie wide receiver class, but there was worry about the duo through the first half of the season.

Ja’Lynn Polk was among the most vocal wide receivers to voice their frustrations with their play and status on the team. The 2024 second-round pick did catch a touchdown last week, so there was reason for optimism.

The same can’t be said for Javon Baker who’s been a healthy scratch in four games and only played in at most six snaps in 10 games. The 22-year-old didn’t complain about his playing time, and he’s still on the mind of the coaching staff.

“Look, this is still a work in progress, and that’s any rookie,” Mayo told reporters, per a team-provided video. “I will also say, we’ve been going for a long time now and so there has to be a point in time, at least for the rookies, to take a breather. Unfortunately, we don’t have that time right now, and we’re going to continue to get better. And he’s been great in the meeting rooms and on the field.”

Mayo likely could be referring to the Patriots having a Week 14 bye. Rookies sometimes emerge stronger and with more knowledge of the system after a bye week. That’s something that could benefit Baker, but he’ll have to bide his time until then.
