Luka Vuskovic making waves

Vuskovic is rated by many as one of the best young talents to have come out of Croatia over recent years, which is why Tottenham pounced on him last year, securing his signing from Hajduk Split.

The centre-back spent last season on loan in Poland before completing a temporary move to Belgian side KVC Westerlo in the summer, and he has been absolutely flying this season.

Not only has the 17-year-old showcased his defensive qualities, but he has also impressed with his ability on the ball and has been a major threat from set-pieces, having notched up four goals and an assist from ten league matches so far.

Weakness identified in Vuskovic’s game

However, it turns out that the teenager did not cover himself in glory for Croatia’s Under-21 side in their clash against Greece on Tuesday.

Although the Croat youngster emerged on the winning side, Vuskovic and his fellow defenders come in for criticism for their lack of defensive awareness.

Tportal wrote: “It is incomprehensible how many problems our defenders had with long balls throughout the game, it mostly refers to Luka Vuskovic. In one situation, a Greek player got between him and Matija Bardic, and they neither communicated nor took over.

“Vuskovic also had this problem when he played in Hajduk because until then he was used to playing with the ball in his feet in the centre as a kid. He lacks some defensive things, but that comes with training and, most importantly, with experience.

“In that situation, when the Greeks had a great chance, he only had to take a step back and catch the man in the backfield. It will come.”

Vuskovic still learning his trade

One can argue that central defence is the hardest position to play in modern football, with players needing to read situations quickly and be switched on for 90 minutes.

That is why one usually finds that centre-backs do not tend to become finished products until their mid to late twenties. Vuskovic is just 17 years of age and it is only natural for him to make mistakes and have errors in judgement. Those errors will improve once he starts training at Hotspur Way with Tottenham.
