Spanish media give mixed reviews on Pedro Porro’s return to national team
Pedro Porro’s performance for La Roja in their 1-0 win over Denmark is not being well received back in Spain.
Porro’s deserved recall
Porro was extremely unlucky to miss out on a place in the Spanish squad for the Euros in the summer, but the Tottenham man managed to force his way back into the squad in light of his impressive start to the season.
The numbers suggest that the 25-year-old has been the best right-back in the Premier League so far this campaign, which is why it did not come as a surprise when he was handed a start for Spain in their Nations League clash against the Danes.
Not the ideal outing
However, it turns out that Porro did not quite have the sort of impact he would have hoped for, with some Spanish outlets being critical of his positioning.
This includes Sport, who handed the Tottenham man a rating of six out of 10 and suggested that he did not have a good understanding with Lamine Yamal on the right flank.
They wrote: “He was often on the right flank, although he needed to get a better understanding with Lamine. At times he would go up his flank with intensity without realising that the Barca player was already occupying that space. He improved in the second half and even tried to get an outside shot.”
Meanwhile, Marca scored Porro just 5.5/10 and added: “The right-back was solid defensively and gave fluidity. In the second half, he dared and shot from a distance but it went wide.”
Having to re-learn position
Porro had to work hard to learn the positional requirements of the inverted full-back role at Tottenham when Ange Postecoglou arrived at the club last season.
Now that he has done that, one would imagine that the movements and positions he takes up have almost become second nature to him.
Perhaps that is why he had challenges re-adapting to a conventional right-back for Spain, with the defender perhaps needing a few more outings to do that.
