Tottenham’s midfield has been weak at times this season

Having led 2-0 at Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend, a monumental second-half collapse saw Tottenham lose 3-2 to the Seagulls.

One of the questionable aspects of the match was Ange Postecoglou’s decision making when it came to substitutes, having brought on Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr with eleven minutes to play and needing a goal to get back into the game.

What Troy Deeney said about Yves Bissouma

Former Watford striker Troy Deeney has not held back with his opinion on Bissouma, who has struggled with consistency since his move from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in June 2022.

Deeney, who now works as a pundit for the BBC following his retirement believes that Brighton would have been delighted to offload the Mali international, claiming he adds nothing to the midfield.

He told his TikTok account: “Something has to change, and at this moment in time the transfer window is closed and you can’t add anything.

“They have goals, Solanke is starting to score, Maddison is doing his thing, Brennan Johnson is doing his thing.

“Midfield is iffy for me still. I’m not the biggest Bissouma fan, I don’t think he adds value, Brighton sold him because they were buzzing to get rid of him, personally.”

Consistency is Yves Bissouma’s biggest problem

Bissouma was arguably Tottenham’s best player in their opening few matches of last season, when he ran the midfield during the 2-0 win over Manchester United in Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge.

His sending off at Luton Town coincided with a huge slump in his performances and he has never managed to string a series of displays to the level we saw in early August 2023 again.

At 28, he should be in his prime and as one of the club’s senior players, setting the example for the younger Spurs first team squad members, however, his off-field antics saw him suspended by the club for the first match of this season at Leicester City.

It’s time for Bissouma to step up and lead Tottenham’s midfield, or face being sold next summer.
